One of the World’s most famous technology laboratories is Bell Labs, started by Alexander Graham Bell, and owned most recently by Alcatel-Lucent. They state on the Alcatel-Lucent website their belief in having a strong patent portfolio that shows off the technology they have researched and led others in.
It’s worth looking closer at some of the technologies that Alcatel-Lucent developed, especially in light of a recent assignment of rights over that intellectual property, from Lucent to Google a couple of weeks ago. This transfer of ownership of patents was surprising after we’ve seen Nokia working towards offering billions to acquire Alcatel-Lucent.

Google has acquired 55 patent filings in a transaction assigning those patents that were recorded at the USPTO on December 17th. There is no financial information about this transaction in the USPTO assignment database, so no telling what this acquisition might have cost. It’s also difficult to tell how technologically significant the patents might be, though some of them appear to be important. These patents look like they mostly have something to do with wireless telephone systems and are likely innovative in their times as coming from the owner of Bell Laboratories.
These look like they involve several technologies that make wireless phone systems work the ways we know them today. These titles especially stood out to me:
- Method to provide high speed broadband communication to a high speed moveable vehicle
- Small Wireless Telecommunications System
- METHOD OF DELIVERING VIDEO INFORMATION OVER A TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
