Summarize with ChatGPT
Contents Overview
Yes, social media can contribute to your brand’s visibility in ChatGPT through public content, discussions, and brand mentions. But engagement, posting frequency, and paid social spend don’t guarantee recommendations.
A shopper watches your product demonstration, reads the comments, and saves the video. A few days later, they ask ChatGPT which product to buy.
Your competitor makes the list. You don’t.
It’s tempting to look at the social calendar and decide you need more content. More videos. More customer stories. Maybe a Reddit account.
But before adding work or budget, look at what informed that recommendation. Was ChatGPT citing a product page, a review, a discussion, or a comparison? What did those sources explain about your competitor that buyers couldn’t find about you?
At Go Fish Digital, we know that social, SEO, and AI visibility should be planned around the same buying decisions. Each team has a different role, but they need to understand the same customer questions.
Does social engagement improve ChatGPT visibility?
A social report might show growing reach, strong video views, and more comments. Those numbers tell you how content performed on the platform. They don’t tell you whether ChatGPT used it or whether your brand appeared in an answer.
Research illustrates the difference.
Semrush analyzed 248,000 Reddit URLs cited or mentioned across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity, with data refreshed in October 2025. Among the cited posts, 80% had fewer than 20 upvotes, and 70% had fewer than 20 comments. Q&A threads accounted for more than half of Reddit citations.
A discussion doesn’t have to attract a large audience to contain a useful answer.
Think about a shopper trying to find out whether a sofa holds up in a home with two dogs. A short conversation between owners could address that concern more directly than a popular room reveal.
That hypothetical example points to a practical content decision. Before asking what will get attention, ask what someone needs to know before buying.
Do YouTube brand mentions help ChatGPT visibility?
Research shows a strong relationship between YouTube brand mentions and AI visibility, although it doesn’t prove that increasing mentions causes more recommendations.
In December 2025, Ahrefs published research covering 75,000 brands. YouTube brand mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility among the factors it tested, approximately 0.737 across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews.
The study counted mentions in video titles, descriptions, and transcripts. Mention counts correlated slightly more strongly with visibility than mentions weighted by video views.
That’s a reason to investigate video’s role in your category. A widely discussed brand may also have more reviews, press coverage, customers, and searches. The research doesn’t isolate the effect of adding a video to your calendar.
It does give marketing teams a better question to ask: Does the video content about our brand explain why someone would choose us?
A product demonstration, an honest comparison, and a customer explaining a specific use case each contribute something different. Counting uploads alone won’t tell you whether you’ve covered the questions that matter.
Which social content does ChatGPT cite?
Profound examined approximately 700,000 social platform citations from ChatGPT responses for U.S. English-language users between October and December 2025.
It found that 85.4% of YouTube citations pointed to individual videos, while 5.3% pointed to channel pages. It also reported that 99% of Reddit citations pointed to individual discussion threads.
For brands, that puts more attention on the substance of individual pieces.
Consider a furniture company planning its next month of content. The calendar includes a collection launch, a styling video, and a founder interview. All may have a purpose. But customer service keeps fielding questions about washable covers and delivery through narrow doorways.
Those questions deserve a place in the plan.
The social team can demonstrate how the covers come off. The website can explain washing instructions and replacement options. Product pages can give precise delivery dimensions. Paid creative can introduce the feature to people who care about it.
That’s the connection we’d make at Go Fish Digital: use a real customer concern to guide work across channels, then measure what each part contributes.
Social citations change, so check the dates
The dates on these studies matter.
In Promptwatch’s September 28–October 4, 2026 sample, seven major social platforms together accounted for 0.46% of ChatGPT citations, compared with 12.2% of Google AI Overview citations.
Otterly also observed a significant change. Across 16 brand reports, it found that ChatGPT’s daily Reddit citations fell 73.4% in August 2026, while overall ChatGPT citation volume increased 3.5% in that sample.
These researchers used different datasets and methods. Their figures shouldn’t be combined into one trend line.
A platform that appeared frequently in an earlier study may have a different role today. Before investing in Reddit or YouTube specifically to improve ChatGPT visibility, check the answers your buyers are getting now.
Social may still be valuable for customer education, discovery, and sales even when its citation share is low. Those benefits need their own measures.
How to improve the information available about your brand
If ChatGPT recommends a competitor, examine the answer before changing your content plan.
What question did you ask? What criteria did the answer use? Which sources supported it? Did your competitor appear because of price, compatibility, availability, or a particular use case?
Then ask whether buyers can find equivalent information about your product.
For an eCommerce brand, start with questions covering:
- Who the product is suitable for.
- How it compares with named alternatives.
- Whether it works in a specific situation.
- What ownership, maintenance, or returns involve.
- Why its price is justified.
Test those questions consistently and inspect the cited pages. You may find a content gap, an inaccurate description, or a competitor with clearer product information.
You may also find that social isn’t the immediate priority.
If your product page leaves out compatibility details, fix them. If a repeated complaint reflects a service problem, content alone won’t resolve it. If a useful demonstration exists only in a short-lived post, consider giving it a permanent place on your website.
This is where SEO and AI search work can inform your wider content plan: identifying missing information and deciding where buyers need to find it.
Make product information easy to verify
A video can show how a product works. A community discussion can surface concerns. Your website should let someone check the details before committing.
Keep specifications, care instructions, delivery information, and product comparisons accurate and consistent.
Technical access is part of that work. OpenAI advises website owners to allow OAI-SearchBot and its published IP addresses to make their sites eligible for ChatGPT search inclusion. Eligibility doesn’t guarantee placement.
For community participation, contribute where you can answer a question well. Disclose your connection to the brand and follow the community’s rules. Share recurring questions with your wider marketing team, whether or not the discussion gets cited.
How to measure social media’s contribution to AI visibility
Keep three measures separate:
- Brand presence: whether your brand appears in answers and how it’s described.
- Citations: which sources support those answers.
- Business outcomes: whether identifiable AI referrals generate relevant visits, inquiries, or purchases.
Record the prompts, dates, search settings, and available model information. Repeat the tests. One favorable answer doesn’t establish a pattern.
If visibility improves after a social campaign, investigate the connection. Website updates, new reviews, media coverage, and changes in ChatGPT’s source selection could also have contributed.
Your paid social campaigns should continue to be evaluated against their campaign goals. Strong ad performance doesn’t establish an improvement in organic AI recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
Can Reddit help your brand appear in ChatGPT?
Reddit discussions can appear as sources in ChatGPT answers. However, observed citation rates have changed substantially over time. Check relevant buyer questions before making Reddit a priority specifically for ChatGPT visibility.
Does paid social advertising improve organic ChatGPT recommendations?
The studies discussed here don’t establish that paid social spend causes more organic ChatGPT recommendations. Measure advertising performance and AI answer visibility separately.
Should brands publish more videos to improve AI visibility?
Start by assessing what your existing videos explain. Research has found a strong correlation between YouTube brand mentions and AI visibility, but it doesn’t prove that publishing more videos causes an increase. Use customer questions to decide which videos are worth creating.
What’s the difference between a brand mention and a citation?
A brand mention means your brand appears in the answer text. A citation links to a source supporting the answer. ChatGPT can mention your brand without linking to your website or social content. It can also cite a discussion without recommending your brand.
Before you add more content, find the missing answers
For Go Fish Digital, the work begins with understanding why a buyer encounters one brand and overlooks another. That requires looking across the website, search results, social content, and the information others publish about the business.
Before increasing social output, find the questions your brand isn’t answering well. An AI Visibility Audit can help identify where you appear today and where closer investigation is needed. From there, your teams can build a plan around the information buyers need to make a decision.
