Contents Overview
AI-powered search results keep expanding. As AI Overviews (AIOs) show up more often, they are changing how users trust information. First, it was the traditional list of blue links. Then, featured snippets started to earn trust before the link list. Now, AI Overviews sit at the top and are becoming the new trust anchor. Being cited here is the closest thing to a modern Michelin star for brands.
Visibility inside these answers matters because:
- AIOs reduce clicks to websites, which increases the value of being mentioned inside the answer box.
- These mentions reinforce topical authority and brand reputation.
- People trust what they see in AIOs, often before they scroll.
This shift is backed by data. In March 2025, about 13 percent of desktop searches in the US triggered an AI Overview, according to SEMrush.
Informational queries are the most likely to trigger them, which means AIOs have largely replaced featured snippets as the fastest path to an answer. Passage-level ranking still appears, but Google increasingly pulls short, direct explanations instead of relying on page-one lists.
A Go Fish Digital analysis highlights Ahrefs’ finding that when an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page sees an average 34.5 percent drop in clickthrough rate.
Meanwhile, only 23.7 percent of searches that triggered AIOs were branded. This shows that brand reputation plays a major role in being selected as a reliable source, even when the query itself is not branded.
The importance of brand in AI-powered search
Brand reputation has always been a trust signal, but in AI-generated answers, it becomes an input signal that can make or break visibility. AI engines rely on webwide brand mentions to determine which voices to trust.
Ahrefs found that brand web mentions show the strongest correlation (0.664) with AI Overview brand visibility.
They also noted that AI visibility is not just about your website. It is about how widely your brand shows up across the web.
This reinforces why brand mentions matter. They:
- Increase visibility
- Strengthen credibility
- Reinforce expertise
- Feed the signals AI systems use to determine authority
E-E-A-T is even more important here. When a brand consistently publishes reliable content around a focused group of topics, it signals expertise. That expertise increases the likelihood of being cited in AIOs. Those citations then reinforce authority, engagement, and recognition. The loop strengthens itself.

Search Engine Journal explains it clearly: “AI Overviews and other AI-generated search features don’t just favor sites that align with E-E-A-T principles. They favor recognized experts. To be cited in AI-driven answers, a brand needs to demonstrate undeniable expertise and establish itself as the authority.”
Impact on SEO Strategy
AI engines rely on authoritative, well-structured content from trusted sources. As Kalina MacKay, SVP of Owned Media at Go Fish Digital, explains: “If your content isn’t structured in a way that AI can interpret and trust, it’s likely not being seen.”
This puts the focus back on clarity, reliability, and semantic structure. Ranking for a single keyword matters less than producing content that reflects how users search and how AI understands language patterns.
Strong structure now includes:
- Clear headers
- Skimmable sections
- Bullet lists
- Question and answer formatting
- High-value keywords used naturally
AI reads more than keywords. It interprets context, entities, and the meaning behind a passage. Content that mirrors actual user behavior and has a clean structure is more likely to be trusted and cited.
AI-powered Search and SEO: Building Brand Visibility beyond Blue Links
AI Overviews are changing how search works and how users consume information. SEO strategy is shifting with it. A keyword in a blue link is no longer the only path to visibility. Ranking still matters, but it is only one part of the visibility equation.
What matters most now:
- Contextual relevance
- Brand visibility
- Webwide credibility
- Authoritative content ecosystems
Users want dependable sources that consistently demonstrate expertise. AI rewards that kind of consistency.
These principles are now at the center of AI-search visibility.
