Your Reviews Are Now GEO: What the Yelp and ChatGPT Deal Means for Your Brand

One of the biggest assumptions in GEO just broke. Most brands still treat their website as the thing to optimize for AI search. But ChatGPT now pulls Yelp reviews, ratings, and photos straight into its answers. Your online reputation no longer just shapes what customers think. It shapes what AI tells them, and they rarely think to question it.
Here’s what happened. On July 23, 2026, Yelp confirmed it’s licensing its reviews, photos, and business data to OpenAI, and its “Request a Quote” feature is coming next so people can reach local providers without ever leaving the chat.
Yelp’s CEO framed the deal as a necessity: to answer local questions well, a model needs the depth of reviews Yelp has spent two decades collecting. OpenAI agrees enough to pay for it. That confirms something our team has been saying for a while. Your website is no longer the only source a model reads when it decides what your business is.
“Large language models synthesize everything they can find about your brand into a single answer. ChatGPT prioritizing Yelp is a clear signal that your website is no longer enough. You have to control your narrative across third-party sites too.” – Tiffany Crockett, SVP of ORM
In our ORM work, one pattern shows up again and again: client feedback rarely scatters across 10 different issues. The same two or three pain points surface over and over. That repetition is exactly what an AI model is built to surface, and once it surfaces, it also repeats.
GEO Now Includes Reviews and Third-Party Brand Signals
Most GEO advice still treats your owned site as the center of the universe: tighten the content, structure the data, and earn the citations. That work still matters as the foundation of your efforts. But it describes only part of how a model builds an answer.
Large language models assemble a view of your business from everywhere they can reach, including review platforms, forums, and third-party profiles that describe you in other people’s words.
When ChatGPT answers “is this place any good,” it is not reading your homepage. It is reading your reviews.
Your Online Reputation and Reviews Can Directly Influence AI Answers
Reviews are no longer a secondary marketing channel. They can be a direct source of information for the AI-generated answer a potential customer sees.
Unanswered one-star reviews, outdated profile information, and repeated complaints about a particular location can affect more than your Yelp performance. They may teach an AI system to associate your brand with those problems.
LLM crawlers can then summarize and repeat that review/narrative, even when it does not reflect the experience you want customers to associate with your business.
If your website is your résumé. Your reviews are the reference check. Models read both, and you want the stories they tell to align.
How to Turn Yelp Reviews Into a GEO Asset
Improving your Yelp presence does not require a complicated strategy, but it does require consistent management. These are the steps we recommend to brands that want their reviews to support their visibility in AI-generated answers.
- Claim and complete every profile. Accurate hours, categories, services, and photos give the model clean, current facts to pull from. Gaps get filled with guesswork.
- Respond to reviews, especially the critical ones. A thoughtful owner response reframes a negative review and hands the model context instead of an unanswered complaint.
- Watch the patterns, not only the average. Models pick up on themes. Three reviews naming the same fixable problem shape an answer more than your star rating does.
- Keep your information consistent across platforms. When your Yelp, Google, and website details disagree, the model has to choose, and it will not always choose your version.
- Treat “Request a Quote” as a live sales channel. Once it reaches ChatGPT, a slow reply is a lost lead you never even saw come in.
Why the Yelp and OpenAI Partnership Matters
Yelp already feeds Apple Maps and other platforms, and Reddit has cut the same kind of deal. OpenAI won’t be the last to license trusted third-party data either. This looks like the start of a broader shift, one where reputation platforms become foundational inputs to AI search.
What this should tell you: AI models aren’t creating your reputation. They’re aggregating it.
Everything that already exists about you, the reviews, the ratings, the offhand Reddit thread, gets pulled into one confident answer. The brands that win are the ones treating GEO and ORM together. One decides what a model can find about you.
ChatGPT may already be forming an answer about your business, whether you have shaped that narrative or not. Use our free Yelp Improvement Calculator to see how many new reviews you may need to strengthen your rating, then build a plan to improve the reputation signals AI platforms rely on.
