O2Trainer tapped into TikTok Shop early, scaling fast with a product-first strategy and performance mindset that led to 5,000% growth in just 60 days.

The O2Trainer is an inspiratory muscle trainer that helps asthma sufferers, athletes, vocalists, deep-sea divers, and beyond improve their lung capacity. The product is designed to strengthen the lungs by controlling users’ air intake, with the ability to increase users’ oxygen intake up to 5×.
UFC Hall of Famer and mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Bas Rutten first had the idea for O2Trainer when he was 14 years old and suffering from severe asthma. Fast forward to today, and the O2Trainer has become a huge hit among asthma sufferers and non-sufferers alike, featured on several popular podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience.

Barriers before the breakthrough

Prior to working with Go Fish, O2Trainer was primarily running awareness campaigns and leaning on podcast videos for content distribution and brand awareness. They enlisted Go Fish to help them tackle conversion optimization and several other challenges:

  1. Increase TikTok GMV (gross merchandise value) and revenue by activating the online community and boosting brand recognition.
  2. Leverage podcast audiences and segmentation across TikTok through both organic reach and ad distribution.
  3. Gain some control over TikTok growth, rather than relying solely on the algorithm.
  4. Provide a high-converting paid search strategy and plan.
  5. Create an organic content strategy and support effective content production, despite limited volume in catalog and staff.

TikTok has always been a platform we were not familiar with, but knew there was opportunity to grow there… When we partnered with Go Fish, the team supported us on content distribution and managed our TikTok profile. We saw a 25% increase in 2023 and are hoping to have an even bigger year in 2024.

Turning content into a conversion engine

Before bringing in Go Fish, O2Trainer experienced some difficulty driving traffic to their site with TikTok Ads, mostly due to a lack of content quantity and strategy. To maximize resources, the Go Fish team leveraged existing podcast footage to create captivating video content targeting the engaged podcast audience.

As the product was mentioned on podcasts Bas was featured on, those videos and hosts seeded the converting audience, which we leveraged to find other similar interest groups and social proof. We utilized targeted ads to increase both sales and community activation, tapping into the podcast communities.

Our understanding of TikTok’s algorithm played to our advantage, knowing that a good audience paired with the right content and information would lead to bigger opportunities to scale.
