How We Analyze and Optimize for Google’s AI Overviews

To help improve your visibility in AI Overviews on Google, we’ve developed a custom system that combines machine learning, Google-published methodologies, and expert human review. Here’s how it works:

1. End-to-End Query and Content Matching
We begin by identifying the AI Overview that appears for a key query relevant to your page. Once we fetch both the Overview and the full content of your page, we analyze them side by side to understand where you currently stand and how you can improve.

2. Semantic Analysis Using Google’s Own Embedding Technology
To ensure alignment with how Google interprets content, we use Google’s text-embedding-005 model to generate semantic embeddings for every passage in the AI Overview and then every passage of your page. These embeddings are vector representations that allow us to compare ideas based on meaning, not just keywords.

3. Matching Passages and Measuring Relevance
We then measure cosine similarity between each AI Overview passage and your content. This shows us exactly where your content aligns with the AI-generated answer—and where it doesn’t.

• If your content closely matches a passage and you’re cited: that’s a win.
• If you have a strong match but aren’t cited: that’s an optimization opportunity.
• If no strong match is found: it’s a content gap we can help fill.

4. Generating Smart, Targeted Recommendations
To make optimization easier, we layer in recommendations using OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 and GPT-o4-mini models. These models help generate rewritten sentences, suggest structure improvements, and even flag content that may need to be moved up on the page to improve visibility.

Examples of these suggestions include:

• Combining multi-sentence explanations into clearer, single-sentence statements
• Rewriting ambiguous references to make topics easier for AI models to interpret
• Flagging weak or missing sections that may be worth adding

5. Human Oversight to Ensure Accuracy
While we use best-in-class AI to accelerate the process, every recommendation is reviewed and refined by a member of our team. We validate that suggestions make sense in your context, ensure nothing is lost in translation, and fine-tune the messaging to match your voice.

6. Scoring and Tracking Progress
We provide a scorecard to show how often your site is cited, how many passages you cover, and where you stand relative to competitors. These scores help us prioritize which areas need the most attention and track improvements after changes are implemented.
